Shake Shack- NYC
I don't know much about Danny Meyer except for what foodie friends in NYC tell me, but I chose his wildly popular Shake Shack as my first meal back in the Big Apple. Why?
- The gorgeous weather, although hot, warranted dining al fresco
- I'd heard that this was a close thing to In-N-Out- I haven't had an In-N-Out burger in over a year!
- How can you go wrong with burgers, fries, and shakes?
I ordered a Shack Burger and a root beer float made with frozen vanilla custard. He ordered a Shack Burger and a chocolate shake (large, please!). Instead of getting our own, we split the order of cheese fries to assuage the "excessive caloric consumption" guilt. I know, I know- we're no better than people who order a Big Mac meal, supersized, with a gallon of Diet Coke to avoid the sugar calories from regular Coke.
But back to the Shack! For New York, the prices were quite reasonable- our meal came to a little over $20. The burgers were juicy and flavorful, yet nothing outstanding. The fries were decent, with the ubiquitous bright yellow cheese sauce oozing over it. In fact, a squirrel garbage-dived a few times next to us to enjoy the frites too!
On to the drinks. My root beer float was disappointing. Here's the thread on Chowhound detailing a similar experience. My float was little more than half full and didn't stay cold at all. I believe the culprit maybe have been warm or room temperature root beer instead of something icy cold- what a simple but costly mistake.
The chocolate shake, however, was great. Deep and rich in chocolate flavor, and a bargain at about $5. There was quality chocolate in that custard. Most shakes I've had recently just didn't seem worth the price- either made in a blender or just plain bad. I was so happy to see that they used milkshake machines!
My first meal at a Danny Meyer joint left me with a good impression. Well-prepared food enjoyed in a nice, tree-covered setting- what more could you ask for on a summer day in the city?
